Refers to all trees and green resources in urban areas such as street and yard trees.
The ground area covered by the leaves, branches and stems from trees which provide shade.
Provides space around the trunk of a tree that is free of grass or weeds and is often covered with mulch.
The action or process of improving the appearance of an area in the community.
Mature trees provide cleaner air to breathe for those living in homes that rest under them, lower electricity bills, and increase property values. KYCC has planted more than 10,000 free trees for LA City residents since 2000.
Plant trees by your apartment building
If you are a renter who wants to see more trees by your building, submit a request to us. We mainly service Koreatown, but we also cover parts of South and Central Los Angeles.
We will handle inspecting the area, obtaining a city permit, planting, and notifying your property manager. Then, we will determine the number of trees we can plant according to the space available.
Order street trees
If you are interested in ordering street trees, please sign and submit this three-year Commitment to Water (CTW) contract to environmental@kyccla.org, stating you are willing to pay a small annual water bill to maintain the tree.
You also have the option of opting out of the contract and asking us to maintain it for you. Please call (213) 365-7400 or email environmental@kyccla.org with further questions.

I am a renter who wants more trees by my building, but I’m concerned about my landlord’s response.
There is still confusion as to who is able to use the strip of land separating the sidewalk and street also known as a ‘parkway’. According to the Los Angeles Municipal Code, the parkway is described as an “area zoned for residential use” separated from the property. This means that all renters have the power to request free trees for the parkway by their apartments, as this is a resource provided by the City of Los Angeles. However, it is important to get permission from the property owner, which is something KYCC can help with.

I want to request more trees, but I’m concerned about being responsible for taking care of a tree
Trees, just like us, require some care before being able to sustain themselves. When growing trees, it is ideal to water your trees once a week with 10-15 gallons of water for the first three years. We are ready to answer your questions and support you through the process. After 3-5 years, the trees graduate to the City Tree inventory, after which the city takes over the responsibility of maintaining them.
-
Will trees cause damage to our sidewalk?
We understand LA has many tree roots uplifting sidewalks and tripping pedestrians. That is why we take the time to determine the right tree and the right place to optimize tree benefits given the amount of space. Each tree is approved by a City inspector to ensure our work followed proper procedure and aligned with proper planting steps.
-
What happens to the street trees I planted after I move?
Street trees will remain at the address it was originally planted. You may request additional trees for your new address.
-
How can I get a free tree?
- Thank you for your interest in beautifying our neighborhood! There are two types of trees with different processes to obtain them: (1) street trees for public, city areas and (2) yard trees for private properties.
- For a free street tree, KYCC covers the expenses and labor of the tree planting process. We only ask residents to water and care for its first few years. Once the Commitment to Water form is completed, we confirm the address eligibility and submit for a city issued permit. It typically takes 3-6 months for the tree to be planted.
- For free yard trees, individuals must be residents of the City of LA or an LADWP customer. Once you confirm your eligibility, you can pick up a tree from one of our Tree Adoption events. You can get notified of our next Tree Adoption event by signing up for our monthly newsletter. Alternatively, you can request a tree from City Plants to be delivered to your home, which is a lengthier process.
-
Where can I get more information about upcoming events?

-
What type of trees do you plant?
KYCC plants drought-tolerant and shading trees that are within City Plants inventory. They are a mix of California native and non-native trees. If you choose to complete a Commitment to Water form, we will give you the option to choose from trees that have been pre-approved by the City of LA.
