On Fri., Nov. 30, 2018, Koreatown Youth and Community Center partnered with Little Bangladesh to do a ceremonial tree planting for the upcoming Bangladeshi Independence Day. Although the official Bangladeshi Independence Day is in March, December 16 is a national holiday in Bangladesh commemorating the victory of the allied forces against East Pakistan in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971.
The Little Bangladesh community selected Flame trees (Brachychiton acerifolius) which bloom bright red flowers, and resemble the deep red color in their Bangladesh flag.
“Little Bangladesh shares it’s borders with Koreatown, and this tree planting was a great way to partner with one of our neighbors to green and beautify Central Los Angeles.” said Will Levegood, Community Engagement Coordinator at KYCC.
